Bristol delft plate decorated in blue with a Qilin and powder blue ground, circa 1740

The Chinese mythical creature, Kalin, is more commonly known as Qilin (麒麟), and is often referred to as the Chinese unicorn. It’s a benevolent, hooved chimera, not an animal in the traditional sense, and is considered auspicious, bringing prosperity and serenity. The Qilin is said to appear during times of great wisdom or peace, or with the arrival or passing of a sage or ruler.
