See N0. 14 in Jonathan Horne’s Catalogue for 2004 for a smaller but similar decorated mug. The white slip on the bottom and inside has a similarity to tin glaze (delftware) used in London potteries though this has a thin lead glaze on top. This would make the tankard more hard wearing than pottery made with just tin glaze. see also N0. 38 in A Catalogue of English Brown Stoneware from the 17th & 18th Centuries compiled by Jonathan Horne.
The silver rim has the initials R. C L. but no assay marks.
