Sir Francis Burdett, 5th Baronet\u00a0(25 January 1770 \u2013 23 January 1844) was a British\u00a0politician\u00a0and\u00a0Member of Parliament\u00a0who gained notoriety as a proponent (in advance of the\u00a0Chartists) of\u00a0universal male suffrage, equal electoral districts, vote by ballot, and annual parliaments. His commitment to reform resulted in legal proceedings and brief confinement to the\u00a0Tower of London. In his later years he appeared reconciled to the very limited provisions of the\u00a01832 Reform Act.\u00a0He was the godfather of\u00a0Francisco Burdett O’Connor, one of the famed\u00a0Libertadores\u00a0of the\u00a0Spanish American wars of independence.<\/p>\n
